Freshmen Library Marathon: Leveling up the Research Game
Throughout September 2024, the Southern Leyte State University Library - Learning Commons hosted a Library Information Marathon aimed at enhancing freshmen students' research skills and enriching their library experience, thereby promoting academic success. The sessions took place at the SLSU Library Mini-Theater, with two daily sessions every Wednesday.
The marathon covered four key topics designed to introduce students to both physical and digital library resources: 1) Library Search Basics – A tutorial on how to efficiently browse and locate materials using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC); 2) Navigating Online Databases – Practical sessions on how to effectively utilize the library’s subscribed online databases to aid in research; 3) OPAC Account Creation and ODILO Registration – A guided process to help students set up OPAC accounts and register for ODILO, the library’s digital platform; and 4) Technology Integration in the Learning Commons – A demonstration of the RFID gate system and the self-service book return facility, showcasing the library’s technological advancements.
The event was led by Ms. Geanrose L. Colonia, Director of the Learning Commons and Library Services, supported by Ms. Geonalyn C. Sumalinog (College Librarian I), Ms. Gale Nathalie A. Tiempo (Reference/Filipiniana Section), and Mr. Reynaldo R. Cebuala Jr. (E-Library Technician). Their collective efforts ensured each session was informative and engaging for all students.
Attendance was mandatory for all freshmen, as it was part of the requirements for securing their library clearance. Through this initiative, the SLSU Library continues to support academic success by providing students with the tools and skills necessary for their studies.
