CoE, SLSU Maasin City Campus present College Research Agenda to stakeholders
To realize the mission of contributing to rural development, the College of Engineering (CoE) of the Southern Leyte State University’s (SLSU) Main Campus, and SLSU Maasin City Campus presented their College Research Agenda, in a separate event, to various stakeholders on October 28 and November 9, 2020, respectively.
The university yearly conducts college and campus research agenda presentations to stakeholders to gather and incorporate the inputs of stakeholders for a more responsive research agenda that optimizes the skills of the respective college or campus and addresses the needs of the community.
CoE and SLSU-Maasin City Campus research agenda presentations were both held online with stakeholders from the community, organizations and participating government agencies. Open forums between the college and campus and the stakeholders were also included in the research agenda presentation to crystallize the concerns and suggestions of stakeholders.
The CoE’s Research Agenda focused on innovating new technologies to improve and help the agriculture, fishery, natural resources and other relevant areas in the region, and developing technologies that will aid in disaster mitigation. It also highlighted the promotion of research on environmental issues arising from energy production, new materials for energy conversion and energy efficiency in the built environment, and development research and innovation that has a strong focus on renewable energy production and green technologies.
Faculty members, staff, and students of CoE are now focusing on the development of technologies that would help communities with no electricity, innovative ways of managing various types of wastes, ensuring clean and sufficient water supply for communities, development of information and communication technologies in government and industries, and developing systems and technologies to better manage the risks posed by disasters and climate change. CoE is currently partnering with barangays Conception and Rizal in Sogod, Southern Leyte for the delivery of research outputs that could be potential technologies that would address the needs and challenges of the community.
SLSU-Maasin City Campus anchored its research on the university’s research agenda on Good Governance, Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction, Transformative Learning, Livelihood Generation & Biodiversity Conservation. Participants of the research agenda presentation covered representatives from office of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Provincial Agricultural Services Office , City Local Government Operations Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office, Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers – Southern Leyte Chapter, Edmund Rice Ministries Foundation, the ERM Disability-Inclusive DRRM Project Team, Plan International Philippines, Philippine Red Cross, Diocesan Social Action Center, SLSU-Maasin Supreme Student Council, parents, alumni association representatives, and the faculty members.
After the online research agenda presentation and consultation with external and internal stakeholders, comments and suggestions will be integrated into the final research agenda of SLSU-Maasin City campus and the College of Engineering. This will then be presented to the University Research and Innovation Office before the inking of a MOA with partner communities and agencies.
However, for SLSU, the way forward however is the continued inclusion of more stakeholders to make the university’s research, instruction, extension, and innovation efforts more adaptive to emerging societal issues and concerns.
