Southern Leyte State U's EM-DRRM office launched; inks partnership with DSWD for relief goods prepositioning
Considering the frequent occurrence of calamities and natural disasters in the province of Southern Leyte, Southern Leyte State University launched its very own Environmental Management-Disaster Risk Reduction (EM-DRRM) Office on December 16, 2022.
Under the directorship of Mr. Gordon Opina, the EM-DRRM office was established in the University to lead the implementation of environmental management and disaster risk reduction and management activities, trainings, and simulation exercises and drills.
Moreover, EM-DRRM provides consultancy, research and extension services in environmental management and disaster risk reduction and management for the university, including partner institutions, and communities.
It likewise supports implementation, coordination, and monitoring of volunteering services for faculty and staff, and students in the university and government projects including volunteer service in socio-economic, environmental, and disaster risk reduction and management in communities.

During the launching of the EM-DRRM Office, Southern Leyte State U signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Social Works and Development (DSWD) for the prepositioning of food and non-food items inside the university campus.
DSWD has initially prepositioned 150 family food packs (FFPs). Another 850 FFPs are yet to be transported to the University.
The Regional Director of DSWD Field Office VIII Grace Subong said that through this partnership, relief items can now be easily accessed and distributed to the nearby communities who are affected by a particular disaster.
The then University President Dr. Prose Ivy G. Yepes also quipped that the collaboration with Southern Leyte State U and DWSD is a very good initiative considering that Southern Leyte province has been hit by a couple of natural calamities in the past couple of years.
Present during the launching of the EM-DRRM and signing of MOA were Regional Director Subong, Dr. Yepes, Dr. Opina, Dr. Anabelle Hufalar, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and some officials and staff of both Southern Leyte State U and DSWD Field Office VIII.
