Project AMUMA Concludes with Strong Focus on Financial Literacy for Fisherfolk
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Tomas Oppus Business Administration (BSBA) Department wrapped up its Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management) on September 20, 2024, with a final training session dedicated to fisherfolk in Brgy. San Isidro and Brgy. Punong.
On the last day of the week-long initiative, the BSBA Department continued its commitment to enhancing financial literacy among local fishing communities, supported by the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc. Participants were eager to absorb crucial information aimed at improving their financial management skills.
The session covered topics including effective investment strategies for fishing equipment, the importance of maintaining accurate financial records, and methods for assessing the profitability of various fishing practices. Participants also explored strategies for diversifying their income streams to build greater financial resilience.
An engaging workshop culminated the program, allowing attendees to create financial plans that addressed their individual circumstances. “This training has opened our eyes to the possibilities,” said a participant from Brgy. San Isidro. “We now feel more empowered to manage our finances and make informed decisions.”
Throughout the week, Project AMUMA aimed to cover all barangays within the LGU Tomas Oppus, focusing on the specific needs and challenges faced by local fisherfolk. Aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Project AMUMA is dedicated to contributing to poverty alleviation, food security, and sustainable economic practices in the region.
As the program concluded, the SLSU – Tomas Oppus BSBA Department expressed gratitude to all participants for their enthusiasm and commitment. The skills gained through Project AMUMA are expected to have a lasting impact on the financial literacy and overall economic well-being of the local fisherfolk for a more secure and prosperous future.
