Project AMUMA Advances Financial Literacy Among Fisherfolk in Southern Leyte
Continuing its mission to enhance financial literacy, the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Tomas Oppus Business Administration (BSBA) Department hosted Day 4 of Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management) on September 19, 2024. This session focused on empowering local fisherfolk in Brgy. San Antonio, Brgy. Maslog, and Brgy. Looc.
Following the successful training sessions of previous days, the BSBA Department engaged its members to create experiences for the participants. With support from the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc., Project AMUMA aims to equip fisherfolk with essential financial skills to help their economic challenges.
In this session, attendees explored into topics such as understanding credit and loans, the importance of establishing emergency funds, and strategies for negotiating better prices in local markets. Additionally, participants learned about the benefits of cooperative purchasing to reduce costs and increase profitability.
“Learning how to negotiate better prices will help us maximize our income,” stated a participant from Brgy. Maslog. As part of the week-long training initiative, Project AMUMA is designed to cover all barangays within the LGU Tomas Oppus, with a strong emphasis on addressing the specific financial needs of the fisherfolk community. By focusing on practical knowledge, the project aims to uplift the economic stability of local fishermen, fostering sustainable practices.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Project AMUMA actively contributes to poverty alleviation and food security in the region.
