Project AMUMA Continues to Empower Fisherfolk in Southern Leyte
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Tomas Oppus Business Administration (BSBA) Department proudly continued its Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management) on September 18, 2024, with Day 3 of training sessions dedicated to enhancing financial literacy among local fisherfolk in Brgy. Tinago, Brgy. Iniguihan, and Brgy. Banday.
Building on the success of the previous sessions, the BSBA Department divided its members into targeted groups to ensure focused engagement with the communities. Supported by the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc., Project AMUMA aims to provide vital financial education to help local fisherfolk navigate their economic challenges.
This session was focused on various topics fitted to the needs of fisherfolk, including effective budgeting for seasonal income, investment strategies for small-scale fishing operations, and understanding market dynamics that affect fish pricing. Participants were also educated on the importance of financial planning for both short-term and long-term sustainability.
A highlight of the day was the interactive workshop that allowed attendees to simulate real-life financial scenarios specific to the fishing industry. "The knowledge we've gained here is invaluable," remarked a participant from Brgy. Iniguihan. "It’s helping us think differently about our earnings and how we can save for the future."
Project AMUMA is designed to unfold over a week-long series of training sessions, with the goal of reaching all barangays within the LGU Tomas Oppus. By focusing on financial literacy, the initiative aims to uplift the economic status of local fisherfolk, equipping them with the necessary tools for better financial management. Aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) – Project AMUMA is committed to fostering poverty reduction, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable economic growth in the region.
