Southern Leyte State University Continues Project AMUMA to Boost Financial Literacy
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) – Tomas Oppus Business Administration (BSBA) Department has successfully continued its initiative, Project AMUMA (Advancing Monetary Understanding and Management), with Day 2 of training sessions taking place on September 17, 2024. This round of workshops focused on enhancing financial literacy among local farmers and fisherfolk in Brgy. Luan, Brgy. Cawayan, and Brgy. Cambite.
Following the successful kickoff on September 16, the BSBA Department organized its members into three groups to effectively engage the community in each barangay. The initiative, supported by the Landbank Countryside Development Foundation, Inc., aims to empower these marginalized groups with essential financial knowledge to tackle their economic challenges.
Participants in this second session explored critical topics such as budgeting techniques, the importance of saving, managing seasonal income fluctuations, and strategies for diversifying income sources. Special emphasis was placed on understanding agricultural financing options and how to utilize available resources to enhance productivity.
Interactive workshops allowed attendees to practice budgeting exercises, enabling them to create personalized financial plans that reflect their unique needs and circumstances. As with the first day, the sessions were met with enthusiasm. Understanding how to manage our finances effectively is crucial for our livelihoods," stated a participant from Brgy. Cawayan. The training sessions are part of a week-long series designed to reach all barangays within the LGU Tomas Oppus. By focusing on financial education, Project AMUMA seeks to uplift the economic standing of local fisherfolk and farmers, ultimately fostering sustainable growth in the region.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). As the project progresses, the SLSU – Tomas Oppus BSBA Department remains committed to making a lasting impact on the financial literacy and overall economic well-being of the local community.
