Southern Leyte State U co-hosts 5th IPOVCON
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) proudly co-hosted the 5th International and 8th National Conference on Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development (IPOVCON), held at the Summit Hotel in Tacloban City on October 16–17, 2024. The conference aimed to address pressing issues surrounding poverty reduction and sustainable development, particularly in the context of post-pandemic recovery.
This year's theme, "Empowering Communities through Sustainable Solutions and Innovation: Harnessing Change for Inclusive Growth," emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in tackling poverty, focusing on grassroots development, education, and local empowerment.
Dr. Jude A. Duarte, SLSU President, along with other prominent personalities in the region have graced the event with their presence. Present were DOST ROVIII Regional Director Dr. Maximo Aljibe, Samar State University President, Dr. Redentor S. Palencia, PASUC President and Batangas State University President Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, and Tacloban City Mayor Hon. Alfred S. Romualdez
The event featured various plenary sessions, paper presentations, poster exhibits and video documentary presentations. highlighting innovative approaches and strategies of various agencies in combatting poverty alleviation. Participants from different countries shared best practices, research findings, and local experiences in combating poverty, with special attention given to regions in Southeast Asia. The conference also served as a platform for launching new collaborative initiatives between international and local organizations, aiming to strengthen community-based programs, improve education access, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
SLSU Faculty members also took part as evaluators and presenters in the conference. Dr. James Brian Flores served as one of the evaluators of Track 1: Sustainable Development Strategies for Inclusive Growth; Dr. Rhoderick Malangsa as an evaluator for Track 2: Innovative Technologies and Social Entrepreneurship for Social Impact; Dr. Eda J. Opina as an evaluator for the video documentaries; Dr. Ingrid Uy as evaluator for the poster exhibits and Dr. Francis Ann R. Sy as an evaluator for the Outstanding Paper of the conference for both tracks.
The two-day event concluded with the signing of a conference resolution and the awarding of the winners of the different tracks and events.
Southern Leyte State University’s co-hosting of the event signifies the University’s involvement in the as a key player in poverty alleviation efforts, reinforcing its mission of producing not just graduates, but change-makers who can contribute to societal progress. Furthermore, SLSU'S co-hosting of IPOVCON 2024 is aimed at targeting the following SDGs: SDG 1 - No Poverty, SDG 2 - Zero Hunger, SDG 8 -Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17 - Partnership for the Goals.
