SLSU Fosters Global Perspectives Through University-wide Cultural Exchange Initiative
Southern Leyte State University reinforces its commitment to internationalization and intercultural learning through Global ConFluence, a university-wide initiative that highlights foreign language education, cultural understanding, and global opportunities for students across its six campuses from April 27 to May 7, 2026.

Facilitated by English Language (EL) Fellow Prof. Maryann Miller, the series of engagements provides students with valuable insights into American and Indonesian languages and cultures while fostering meaningful discussions on global mobility, professional opportunities, and international collaboration.
The program commences on April 27 at the SLSU Hinunangan Campus, where Prof. Miller engages Education students in a discussion on the diverse linguistic and cultural landscape of the United States. The session explores the country's regional identities, its upcoming semiquincentennial celebration of independence, and its continuing role as a destination for professional advancement, particularly among Filipino educators.

The following day, April 28, the initiative reaches the SLSU San Juan Campus, where Education students participate in an interactive discussion on educational opportunities and professional development programs available in the United States. The session emphasizes how international exposure and training contribute to the growth of future educators and strengthen their capacity to address the demands of an increasingly interconnected world.
On May 6, Global ConFluence continued at the Maasin City and Tomas Oppus campuses. Joining Prof. Miller are Dr. Lorelie Paloma, Mr. Lourd Ive Visbal, and Ms. Carmelle Antegra, who shares their experiences and insights on Indonesian language and culture through a re-echo activity following their participation in the UMN Indonesian Experience Program.

Students from the Social Work and Public Administration programs at the Maasin City Campus actively engage in discussions on migration, cultural adaptation, and opportunities available to Filipinos in the United States. The session also highlights pathways to international academic engagement, with speakers sharing firsthand experiences of participating in student mobility programs despite financial limitations. Their stories underscore the value of perseverance, preparation, and institutional support in accessing global learning opportunities.
The final leg of the program takes place on May 7 at the Bontoc and Sogod campuses. Agriculture and Marine Biology students at the Bontoc Campus explore emerging opportunities for professionals in their respective fields in the United States, gaining a broader perspective on the global relevance of their academic disciplines.

Meanwhile, Education students at the Sogod Campus express appreciation for learning about the linguistic and cultural similarities between Indonesia and the Philippines. The discussions encourage participants to recognize and further explore the shared heritage and connections among Southeast Asian nations, emphasizing the importance of regional understanding and cooperation.
Through Global ConFluence, SLSU provides students with a platform to engage with diverse cultures, broaden their international perspectives, and develop a deeper appreciation for the role of language and culture in fostering global understanding. The initiative reflects the university's continuing efforts to advance internationalization and prepare graduates who are globally aware, culturally competent, and equipped to contribute meaningfully in an increasingly interconnected world.
