SLSU Main Campus Strengthens Dengue Prevention Measures
In response to the rising cases of dengue in Eastern Visayas, including the Province of Southern Leyte, Southern Leyte State University – Main Campus, through its General Services Office (GENSO), with close supervision from the University’s clinic and the Sogod Rural Health Unit (RHU), conducted a pest control activity on September 7, 2024. This included a spraying operation across the campus as a preventive measure to repel mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This spraying operation is just the first in a series of operations that the University is planning to conduct.
Prior to the spraying activity, on September 3, 2024, the Sogod RHU held an orientation session with selected GENSO personnel and the staff of the University’s clinic. The session covered the proper application of pesticides, the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the specific areas where pesticides would be applied.
This initiative is part of the University’s efforts to support the Department of Health’s “5S” strategy to combat dengue: search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; practice self-protection measures like using insect repellents; seek early consultation at the nearest healthcare facility; support fogging, spraying, and misting in hotspot areas; and maintain hydration.
Furthermore, this initiative is in line with the University’s goal of ensuring a safe and healthy community for its students, employees, and stakeholders, as safety is a top priority. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal No. 3: Good Health and Well-being.
