1,014 students-grantees receive TES stipend starting today
For the first semester of the academic year (A.Y.) 2019-2020, a total of 1,014 new students-grantees of Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) across all campuses have started to receive the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) stipend on November 9, 2020, at SLSU Main Campus at Sogod, Southern Leyte.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST) has been making the TES stipend available since 2018.
Each student-grantee received a check worth Php 20,000. There are 496 grantees from SLSU-Main Campus, 126 from both SLSU-San Juan and SLSU-Tomas Uppus Campuses, 101 from SLSU-Maasin City Campus, 97 from SLSU-Hinunangan Campus, and 68 from SLSU-Bontoc Campus.
Meanwhile, from July to August 2020, the same amount of checks was distributed to 1,572 continuing TES grantees from different campuses. There were 818 from SLSU-Main Campus, 215 from SLSU-Tomas Oppus Campus, 158 from SLSU-San Juan Campus, 145 from SLSU-Bontoc, 128 from SLSU-Maasin City Campus, and 108 from SLSU Hinunangan. The stipend given to them was also for the same semester of A.Y. 2019-2020. It was distributed, however, through their respective Local Government Units (LGU) due to strict protocols and border restrictions brought upon by the pandemic.
The TES is a government grants-in-aid program made possible through Republic Act 10931 that gives P60,000 per school year to financially-needy students in private schools and those studying in private schools in municipalities and cities without public universities. The TES is used by students to pay their tuition and miscellaneous fees and other education expenses. It is the flagship social development program of the Duterte administration on higher education.
