TRAIL II Boosts Karlang Enterprises: Farmers in Barangay Lonoy Trained on Costing, Packaging, and Marketing
As part of the extension project "Transformed and Resilient Community Through Alternative Indigenous Livelihoods (TRAIL II)," Activity 4 engaged 45 farmers from Barangay Lonoy, Maasin City, in a two-day capacity-building activity on November 19–20, 2025. The activity, titled "Retooling on Proper Costing, Packaging, and Marketing of Karlang Flour and Other Karlang Products," aimed to equip farmers with practical skills to improve the production, packaging, and marketing of karlang-based products, enhancing their livelihood opportunities and promoting sustainable indigenous practices.
The activity was formally opened by Ms. Juvenal Flores-Sumaya, a faculty member of SLSU Maasin City Campus and the activity leader, who welcomed the participants and outlined the program's objectives. During the initial sessions, Mr. Jundel Sumaya, Administrative Staff of the Accounting Office at SLSU Maasin City Campus, served as a resource speaker for Costing Methods and Allocation, guiding participants on different costing methods, cost allocation techniques, and strategies for calculating production costs of karlang products. This was followed by sessions conducted by Ms. Juvenal Flores-Sumaya on Analyzing Real-World Scenarios in Applying Costing Concepts, Packaging Regulations and Compliance, and Emerging Technologies and Trends in Packaging, which helped farmers apply theoretical concepts to practical scenarios, understand regulatory requirements, and explore innovative packaging methods.
The program also covered topics on alternative sustainable products, understanding target markets, and forging agreements with buyers. Norbella J. Roxas introduced farmers to innovative karlang-based products that support sustainable livelihoods, followed by a session on Understanding Target Market facilitated by Salvacion S. Teng, where farmers learned how to identify customer needs and preferences. The final session, Identifying Target Market and Forging Agreement with Target Market, was conducted by Mr. Jundel Sumaya, guiding farmers on building partnerships and securing sustainable sales. The activity was formally concluded by Dr. Jonathan Palco, who also served as facilitator, and IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials were distributed to support continued learning.
The two-day activity successfully strengthened the farmers' skills in costing, packaging, product innovation, and marketing strategies. Beyond knowledge and practical skills, the program fostered collaboration and networking among participants, empowering them to improve their karlang-based enterprises and promote resilient livelihoods. Activity 4 marks another milestone in the TRAIL II project's broader goal of building a transformed and resilient community through alternative indigenous livelihoods in Maasin City.
