SLSU–San Juan launches “HOPE in Action” outreach for the Mamanwa Community

The Faculty of Teacher Education of Southern Leyte State University–San Juan Campus successfully launched a one-day feeding and grocery distribution initiative through its flagship extension program, HOPE (Helping Others through Participatory Engagement). Held on May 14, 2025, in Barangay Malinao, Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte, the outreach directly benefited 50 Mamanwa children and their families by addressing their immediate nutritional and basic needs.
During the activity, children were provided with snacks, while families received essential grocery packs containing rice, canned goods, noodles, and hygiene products. These items were generously contributed by first-year Bachelor of Secondary Education students and faculty members, led by Dr. Vangilit G. Retome. The initiative reflected the San Juan Campus' unwavering commitment to inclusive, needs-based community engagement.
More than a distribution effort, the outreach also served as a meaningful learning experience for aspiring educators and faculty, allowing them to engage with an indigenous community and foster deeper awareness, empathy, and solidarity. The initiative underscored the university's recognition of the Mamanwa people's dignity and their rightful inclusion in the broader development narrative.
“HOPE in Action” exemplifies Southern Leyte State University–San Juan Campus’ sustained dedication to uplifting marginalized communities. Through consistent outreach and people-centered educational initiatives, the university continues to be a catalyst for social transformation—empowering individuals, nurturing community partnerships, and advancing equity at the grassroots level.
