2014 Extension Activities
Southern Leyte State University’s (SLSU) extension activity for the year centered on extension pilot site Brgy. Milagroso, an upland barangay in Sogod mostly composed of migrant families many of whom are into daily wage jobs, and are tenants of coconut lots, and growers of abaca.
Right after SLSU held the successful International Research Congress and Business Forum on Rubber and Freshwater Prawn in March, it shifted its attention quickly to extension, deciding in April to make Milagroso the hub of its extension activities. RDE and several research and extension coordinators of academic departments took to Milagroso on April 16 for a benchmark assessment composed of gender-segregated focus group discussions and over a hundred household surveys, carried out with help from the local council.
RDE and a full-force delegation of research and extension coordinators and RDE staff returned to Milagroso on July 10 for a community validation on the results of the assessments. To fast-track the creation of extension research proposals, RDE held the ‘Writeshop for the Preparation of Extension Proposal’ in time for the Research and Extension Proposal Review and Evaluation in July 28 where research and extension proposals were evaluated.
“We can make plans and say ‘Well, let’s do this and let’s do that for that community,’“ said RDE Director Nestor Morales. “But that’s not the way we want it. We’re contrary to the top-down approach. We want it to be participatory.”
Making up SLSU’s download of extension projects for Milagroso are the Industrial Technology Department’s High Speed Sewing and Commercial Cooking class, the Rehabilitation and Designing of Barangay Milagroso’s Water System of the Engineering Department; Seminar on Project Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of Development Projects by the Master in Management Program faculty members of the Graduate School and tree planting, environmental awareness campaign, and school-on-the-air program on organic agriculture by administrative and facilitative staff.
Other extension projects that did not follow the Milagroso path, implementing extension in other locations in the municipality, are the Robotic Training for high school students of the Computer Science in Information Technology Department, livelihood training and counseling for BJMP inmates by the Criminology Department, and barangay office repair, book and bookshelves donation, and bamboo planting by the Industrial Education Department.

Incentives for extension work enliven administrative staff in a meeting on July 9, 2014. RDE Director Nestor Morales reviewed the four new thrusts of research and extension – transformative learning strategies, livelihood generation, biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation and disaster risk management, and why Milagroso is the right location to nail all the new thrusts.
