SLSU Co-Hosts National Conference on Methodological Advances
After close to two years of monthly research engagements with former CHED Commissioner Roberto Padua, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) teamed up with Leyte Normal University (LNU) and Naval State University (NSU), to host the National Conference on Methodological Advances in Research held on October 21-23, 2015 at Leyte Normal University in Tacloban City, with the conference participated by paper presenters from Bukidnon State University, Northwest Mindanao State College, Camarines Norte State College, Laguna State Polytechnic University, Governor Alfonso D. Tan College, Capiz State University, Cebu Normal University, Eastern Visayas State University, Palompon State University, Samar State University, Siquijor State College, University of the Visayas, West Visayas State University, NSU, LNU and SLSU.
The presentations were divided into four strands: 1) Simulation and Modelling, 2) Data Mining and Theory Building, 3) Fractal Statistics and 4) Multivariate Methods. The presentations also had a Non-Competing category.
SLSU’s San Juan campus supplied the bulk of SLSU’s presenters with 8 faculty members presenting papers mostly in the area of fractal analysis. The same group brought the honors for SLSU with two papers awarded the second prize for Best Research Presenter and second prize for Best Paper.
SLSU San Juan’s Fil Ryan Yap and Cerenio Adriatico bagged the 2nd place for Best Paper for their research Variations of Research Budget Distributions in Philippine State Universities and Colleges Utilizing Fractal Analysis.
SLSU San Juan’s Adriatico was also awarded 2nd place as Best Presenter for his paper Hidden Dimensions of Internal Displacements Distribution.
Two papers of SLSU-Sogod campus were accepted for presentation under the non-competing category. Presenting under this category were statistics instructor Rujube Hinoguin and computer science instructor Rhoderick Malangsa.
Rhoderick Malangsa from the Computer Science and Information Technology Department of SLSU-Sogod presents his paper Performance Comparison of Decision Stump and J48 Classification Algorithm on the Programming Skill of IT Students in the Non-Competing category.
The conference was graced by the first president of the then Visayas State College of Agriculture (ViSCA) Fernando A. Bernardo, who being the key speaker, recounted how he propelled ViSCA from being a virtually unknown college into a premier agricultural research institution, which was his basis for his speech on building a research culture in the university.

Other academic personalities in attendance were recently named National Scientist Angel C. Alcala, and research consultant of the conference hosts and former CHED Commissioner Roberto N. Padua.
Apart from being presenters and participants, SLSU was also tapped to provide evaluators for the paper competition. Adding to the pool of evaluators from Visayas State University, Leyte Normal University, Eastern Visayas State University, and Naval State University, were SLSU’s Dewoowoogen Baclayon and Homer Hermes de Dios, both from the SLSU-Bontoc campus, and both past and present editors-in-chief, respectively, of SLSU’s Journal of Science, Engineering and Technology.
SLSU’s total delegation to the Conference numbered over 30 participants.
