Mentoring a ‘Yolanda-Based’ Course
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) is one of the universities responding to the call of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery for ‘mentors’ in a new course: Master in Public Management major in Local Governance and Development to be administered by the Development Academy of the Philippines’ Graduate School for Municipal and Provincial Planners in the Yolanda Corridor.
The graduate course is designed for municipal and provincial planners in the areas hit by typhoon Yolanda in November 2013. The course is heavily subsidized and will be accomplished in only fourteen months, SLSU Extension Unit Head Veronica Reoma said.
Reoma was endorsed by SLSU-Sogod to the Training for Trainers workshop for ‘mentors’ on November 24-26, 2014 at Aklan State University. The training gathered mentors from state universities in Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Aklan, Cebu, Iloilo and Negros – areas hit by typhoon Yolanda. SLSU-Tomas Oppus also sent Constantino Medilo to the workshop as another mentor.
The course will cover topics in town planning, basic economics and finance, community resilience, environmental and development planning to be capped by an action plan and a thesis. Reoma will mentor enrolled students on research paper development.
Classes are scheduled to start in January and will be held in Tacloban City, even as participating universities in the program are also expected to provide venue for instruction and accommodation for the mentors if necessary. Mentors are expected to meet the mentee on a monthly basis within the 14 month program. Interested applicants may contact their local government units to enroll in the program. Reoma can also be reached through the Research, Development and Extension office email address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Mentoring research creates the perfect blend for Reoma’s longtime research work and background in Management. Reoma, pictured above at the Training for Mentors workshop with Ludito Ramirez of Naval State University, also teaches Management for SLSU’s Master of Management program.
