DOST-PCIEERD Checks Up on SLSU
Research specialists from the Philippines Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research of the DOST (DOST-PCIEERD) came to SLSU on June 26 to feel the effect of the Balik-Scientist Program in SLSU, which SLSU availed of in 2013, in order to build capacity in the area of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
To demonstrate knowledge of GIS gleaned from trainings given by Balik-Scientist Alejandro Tongco, faculty members from SLSU’s different campuses were selected to present GIS-engaged research proposals before the PCIEERD guests in a special program at the SLSU Board Room.
From the PCIEERD side, research specialist Glenda Dorcas Sacbibit presented opportunities within PCIEERD in the form of grants that can be bestowed for the conduct of outstanding research in the area of science and technology, and the arrangements within the Balik-Scientist Program between balik-scientists and host institutions.
Presenting GIS-aided or GIS-based proposals for SLSU were Joey Caraquil from SLSU-Tomas Oppus (Mapping of Existing Industries and Labor Market Needs in So. Leyte: Possible Target Recipients of Junior High School Graduates), Noel Celeste of SLSU-Bontoc (Participatory Community-Based Soil Characterization Using GIS) and Gary Garcia of SLSU-San Juan (GIS-Based Assessment of the Land Use and Land Cover of Southern Leyte State University Campuses).
Not able to present was Ruther Manun-og of SLSU-Hinunangan (Design of a Geocoded Unique Household Identification Number).
To gather support for the creation of a GIS center, GIS expert Alejandro Tongco presented his proposal for the creation of the SLSU GIS Tech Center.
