SLSU Makes Efforts to Create Global Visibility in Research
One of the hurdles Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) had to overcome over the past years was the number of citations obtained by its journals, which figures significantly in normative financing. That will be soon be solved with SLSU’s commitment to adopt the Open Journal System (OJS), an open-source tool that both facilitates indexing in Google Scholar and the editorial management workflow of the journal.
SLSU-Sogod faculty members Geraldine Mangmang and Ramon Fernandez Jr. from the Computer Studies and Information Technology (CSIT) Department and university RDE Coordinator Tamar Mejia were in Cagayan de Oro City on June 8-11, 2016 for the National Seminar-Workshop on Journal Layout and Design and Open Journal Systems. Mejia who is familiar with journal management, will have to partner with Information Technology specialists who will operate the OJS system.
With the potential indexing of SLSU articles in scholarly modalities like Google Scholar, international citations from SLSU’s journal articles will be easier to track, given SLSU’s global visibility this time, boosting SLSU’s record in research citations.
SLSU’s decision to adopt OJS is also anchored on the results of the Organizational Conference of Visayas-Mindanao SUCs with Categories A or B Journal on Journal Specialization and Resource Sharing held in May 2016 which discussed resource sharing, creation of specialized journals to increase the chances of accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education, and strategies on online visibility to increase the number of citations.
