Digital Innovation for Local Governance: SLSU enhances LGU Bontoc Operations with Document Tracking System
The Faculty of Computing and Information Sciences (FCIS) continues to strengthen its commitment to community extension and digital transformation through the deployment of a Document Tracking System currently utilized by the Local Government Unit of Bontoc Municipal Office. Conducted on January 9, 12, and 13, 2026, this initiative highlights the meaningful transition of a student-developed capstone project from an academic output into a functional technology-based solution that supports local governance operations.
The project was developed to address the need for a more organized, efficient, and transparent way of monitoring documents within the municipal office. Through the system, document transactions can be recorded, tracked, and managed digitally, helping reduce delays, misplaced files, and manual monitoring concerns. It also supports faster access to document status, improved accountability, and a more systematic office workflow.
As part of the FCIS extension service, the system demonstrates how student-developed innovations can create practical impact beyond the classroom. The deployment of the Document Tracking System reflects the role of FCIS in helping partner communities adopt digital solutions that improve public service delivery. It also showcases the capability of students and faculty to respond to real institutional needs through research, development, and community engagement.

During the presentation and orientation, LGU Bontoc personnel were introduced to the features and functions of the system. The activity provided an opportunity for users to understand how the system can be applied in their daily operations, particularly in recording incoming and outgoing documents, monitoring document status, and improving coordination among offices. The engagement also allowed the developers and faculty proponents to gather feedback for possible system enhancement and sustainability.

This initiative is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, as it promotes the use of digital innovation in public institutions; SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, as it supports transparency, accountability, and efficiency in government processes; and SDG 4: Quality Education, as it transforms academic learning into a relevant community-based technology solution.
The successful use of the Document Tracking System in the LGU Bontoc Municipal Office serves as a strong example of how capstone projects can be extended into meaningful community services. More than a system deployment, it represents a partnership between the academe and local government in advancing digital governance, improving institutional operations, and delivering better service to the community.
Through this initiative, FCIS reaffirms its commitment to producing technology-driven solutions that are not only academically relevant but also socially responsive and community-centered.
