SLSU Graduate Programs Mark 2026 Celebration with Coastal Conservation and Strategic Curriculum Consultation

Southern Leyte State University successfully celebrated its “Graduate Programs and Advanced Higher Education Day” on February 28, 2026, bringing together environmental stewardship and academic innovation in a meaningful and forward-looking observance. Spearheaded by the Office of the Director for Curriculum Innovation, Credentialing and Lifelong Learning under Mr. Mark Donald S. Oja, in close coordination with the Association of Graduate Students of SLSU-Sogod (AGS) led by President Mr. Danilo B. Vero Jr., the event reflected the university’s commitment to shaping graduate education that is both globally competitive and socially responsive.

The celebration began with a Mangrove Planting and Coastal Clean-up activity in Brgy. Maac, Sogod, Southern Leyte. The initiative was conducted following a preparatory Seminar-Orientation on Mangrove Planting and Conservation held on February 21, 2026, equipping participants with essential knowledge to ensure proper planting techniques and the survival of the seedlings.

A total of 400 mangrove seedlings were successfully planted, generously provisioned by the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (PENRMO).

The environmental activity was made possible through the collaborative efforts of SLSU-Bontoc Campus through the assistance of Mr. Jimmy E. Salamida, the MENRO-Sogod personnel headed by Engr. Federico T. Ozon, RCE, and the Barangay Officials of Brgy. Mac led by Barangay Captain Hon. Renato D. Calalin. The morning activity underscored the university’s belief that higher education must be grounded not only in theory but also in concrete actions that protect and sustain local ecosystems.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the future of advanced education through a Stakeholders’ Presentation and Curriculum Consultation. The session gathered key partners and experts to examine the direction of the university’s graduate programs and ensure their alignment with regional and global demands. Among those who shared insights were Dr. Danilo Atienza, PDRRMO Officer of Southern Leyte; Dr. Fe Alin Dalangin of SLSU-Hinunangan Campus; Dr. Ramil T. Uy, Provincial Director of PSTO-Southern Leyte; and Ms. Arnie V. Estillore, Tourism Officer of LGU-Hinunangan.

The consultation generated meaningful dialogue on research, innovation, and relevance in graduate education. University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte emphasized that research and innovation must serve as pillars of global development, positioning the graduate school as a catalyst for transformative change.

Dr. Ramil T. Uy highlighted that curriculum revision should go beyond routine compliance, describing it as a continuing quest to rediscover the fundamental purpose of every course offered. Reinforcing this perspective, Dr. Danilo Atienza stressed the importance of staying responsive to an ever-changing world, urging the university to align its programs with the pressing needs of disaster resiliency and regional development.

The celebration of Graduate Programs and Advanced Higher Education Day ultimately demonstrated that advanced learning extends beyond intellectual cultivation. It affirmed that true academic excellence is intertwined with social responsibility—nurturing scholars who are not only competent and innovative, but also deeply committed to community engagement and environmental sustainability.
