SLSU conducts reorientation of GE curriculum for faculty, academic leaders
Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) successfully conducted a 3-day university-wide faculty training workshop entitled “Reorienting the General Education Curriculum: Reaffirming the Promise of CMO 20, s.2013 in Advancing Transformative Education at SLSU” on October 16–18, 2025. Spearheaded by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Office of the Director for Instruction, this academic initiative brought together faculty members and academic leaders across SLSU's six campuses to revisit, reflect on, and revitalize their approach to General Education (GE).
This event served as a critical platform to realign GE courses with the principles of Outcomes-Based Education (OBE), institutional goals, and the shifting demands of the 21st-century learning environment.
The training aimed to deepen faculty understanding of the rationale and goals of the GE Curriculum under CMO 20, s.2013; align GE course instruction with SLSU’s Vision, Mission, graduate attributes, and strategic goals; present pedagogical models and teaching strategies fit for interdisciplinary and OBE-based GE courses; introduce current and emerging educational innovations, including digital tools and AI-enhanced learning; and guide faculty in enhancing their GE syllabi to reflect an outcomes-based and integrative approach.

Dr. Greg Tabios Pawilen, curriculum theorist, CHED Technical Panel Consultant, and one of the country’s foremost experts on General Education, served as the keynote speaker and main resource person. His lectures laid the philosophical, policy-based, and pedagogical foundation for the workshops, setting the tone for deeper academic engagement and practical application.

Adding value to this event was the special participation of REX Book Store represented by Mr. Isidro Bagacino, a leading education solutions provider in the Philippines, participated in the event by showcasing instructional resources, GE-aligned materials, and innovative teaching tools. Their engagement during the event reaffirmed their support for higher education institutions committed to academic excellence and transformative learning.
SLSU’s commitment to transformative education continues with the participants tasked to cascade their learnings within their respective campuses. Plans for follow-through activities, peer mentoring, and curriculum audits are already in motion to ensure that General Education at SLSU remains a strong, relevant, and dynamic foundation for all undergraduate programs.
This initiative reaffirms SLSU’s role in shaping future-ready Filipino graduates equipped not only for employment but for ethical citizenship, civic leadership, and lifelong learning.
